The Buffalo Winter Storm Knife 2014 has hit!!
Living in Buffalo my whole life, this storm November 18, 2014, is just as bad as I remember The Blizzard of 77 being! I was in grammar school then…I am a mom and adult now and we are living right in the Eye of the Storm so I thought I would share some photos and tips and tricks of Living in Buffalo Storms!!
The pictures above left show Mark Branden's view of from the city and I live right on the water in the midst of that huge snow cloud!! The 3 pictures on the right are of my side yard and back yard along with the view of the waves from our lower patio!! We have 4 feet of snow right now and its still coming down!! Thankfully, I have a good stock pile of food from my shopping stock up trips and I made a trip to Tops Friendly Markets yesterday for last minute essentials just in case 🙂
We have 4 feet of snow since last night and it keeps coming down….with a chance of up to 7 feet by Weds afternoon!
While all of this seems fun and exciting, we are in a dangerous situation if you are trying to get out and travel on the roads. Intense whiteouts cause zero visibility.
Right now Erie County is in a State Of Emergency with Orchard Park, Lackawanna, Blasdell, South Buffalo and Hamburg getting hit the worst and Driving Bans in many areas. IT IS ILLEGAL TO DRIVE IN A DRIVING BAN!! There are people trapped out on the roadways. Police and Fire Departments are asking for snowmobile volunteers to go out and help rescue those stranded. If you are not emergency personnel or have a snowmobile to volunteer–STAY HOME! Much of the issue on the roads is stranded cars that plows can't get by or through, people stuck on thruways etc.
134 miles of thruway is shut down and still not cleaned up!! They are deploying the National Guard to help clean up!!
Ways to Survive and Even Help in a Winter Storm:
1) Shovel a walkway for access to get from your house.
2) Check your Dryer Vents, Furnace Vents, Fireplace Vents to make sure clear of snow and ice so gas and carbon monoxide vent out and do not stay trapped in your home causing Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
3) Stay tuned to your local News stations. WGRZ.com, WIVB.com and WKBW.com have been working overtime to bring the newest updates to Buffalo Residents as they are happening. Thank you to all of them for keeping us up to date
4) You can also tune into your local ErieFire/Police Scanners online at http://www.broadcastify.com/listen/ctid/1839. Thank you to our local Police, Fire, Emergency and Transportation Departments for always keeping us safe and bailing us out these snow storms!!
5) Check with your neighbors to make sure they are safe, warm and have food. Many times in situations like these, we lose power, have flooding, have no heat or maybe didn't get to the store or maybe Meals on Wheels can't get to them…. You never know when you may be able to help someone out! Buffalo residents have always had a great reputation for being great neighbors so make sure to do your part!
6) Enjoy the time you have at home with your family and cook a nice home cooked meal and maybe have a coffee with Baileys to keep warm 🙂
UPDATE: There is WNY November 2014 Storm Help Facebook Group I was just added to—stranded motorist are posting their locations here to ask for help! Click here to go to the group and offer help if you may be near them!
Please share this group with any and everyone to try to get them help! Police can not get to them fast enough and they are running out of gas so will be no heat and some have had no food for 16 hours!!
Update Weds Nov 19: Here are my latest pictures of the snow in my back yard. The dark pictures were 11pm Nov 18 and the light pictures of Nov 19 morning. 5.25 feet and 30″ more coming!!
The count is 5.25 feet so far. 30″ more coming #buffalostorm2014

Geez, and I thought the weather bad was here in Michigan, I couldn't even imagine getting 5+ feet of snow.. And yes, Bailey's and coffee is what gets me through the winter.

Don't forget to work together with all of your closed neighbors since it is very important in an emergency situation to help each other. Ten families are much better than one family in facing winter storm. Together we can survive.
